What is overarticulation?

Overarticulation is a compensatory strategy that helps improve speech clarity. It works by over-emphasising consonant sounds β€” the non-vowel sounds in words β€” making speech clearer and easier for listeners to understand.

It is particularly useful when dysarthria affects articulation, causing imprecise consonant production that reduces intelligibility.

When to use it

  • When your speech sounds unclear or slurred
  • When listeners ask you to repeat yourself
  • In noisy environments or on the phone
  • When speaking to someone unfamiliar with your speech
πŸ‘„
Exaggerate
Over-emphasise your mouth movements and consonant sounds
πŸ”΅
Wide mouth
Open your mouth wider than you normally would when speaking
🐒
Slow down
Reduce your rate β€” your muscles need more time to produce each sound clearly
πŸ“’
Loud voice
Use a louder voice β€” this naturally improves consonant precision

Read each item aloud using overarticulation. Remember: exaggerate, wide mouth, slow down, loud voice.
